During Summer 2002, Media Workshop New York sponsored the third annual Summer Kids Institute for middle school-aged students. The Kids Institute is designed to help young people explore computer technology in the context of everyday life, with this summer's focus on arts and culture. The goal of the Kids Institute is to empower young people with the knowledge and the tools necessary to continue to develop both personally and technologically as they embark on tasks involving web design and various forms of research.

Participants had the exciting opportunity to produce a digital magazine about various forms of art in New York City. Through the use of technology, field exploration and hands-on activities, participants designed a magzine about digital art, theater production, and dance. Participants also visited public art spaces and art museums to learn more about visual arts.
