During the summer 2001, Media Workshop New York sponsored a Summer Kids Institute for middle school-aged students. The program is open to children of Bertelsmann and affiliates employees. The Kids Institute is designed to help young people explore computer technology in the context of everyday life, with particular focus on historical issues pertaining to New York City neighborhoods. The goal of the Kids Institute is to empower young people with the knowledge and the tools necessary to continue to develop both personally and technologically as they embark on tasks involving web design and various forms of research.

The Summer Kids' Institute is divided into two sessions. Group A spent time studying the neighborhoods of the Lower East Side and Harlem. Group B spent time studying the neighborhoods of the Lower East Side and they traveled on the 7 train through Queens, visiting sites along the way. We invite you to follow the links to these kid-developed websites. Each group went on walking tours, ate at restaurants and visited museums in order to gain content information for their web sites.
