Creating Listserves

Listserve:

A program that contains a list of e-mail addresses under one single e-mail address. When an e-mail message is sent to that singe address, it is automatically forwarded to all the addresses in the list.

Why would a teacher consider creating a listserve?

  • Promoting Discussion: Students who normally do not speak up in class might be more comfortable expressing their views through e-mail and listserves. Students can be encouraged to lead discussions using an electronic forum such as a listserve. Also, if the teacher runs out of time in class while covering a topic, the teacher can finish the discussion through a listserve.
  • Announcements and Reminders: If the teacher forgets to remind the class about a homework assignment or an upcoming quiz, the teacher can simply send an announcement to the class list. Also, in case a student misses class, he or she can check e-mail to keep up with the class.
