Modifying Existing Graphs

(modified from Microsoft in Education's Excel 97 lesson)

Open the graph or chart you wish to modify.

Enlarging chart titles:

  • Right-click the chart title. Choose "Format Chart Title..."
  • In the Font tab, choose a larger font size (i.e. 18 point).

Rotating titles of axes:

Notice that the label for "Number of Web Sites" is a bit long to be placed horizontally in the graph. Let us rotate the label so it is vertical.

  • Right-click the label. (In this case, right-click "Number of Web Sites")
  • Choose "Format Axis Title..."
  • Click on the Alignment tab and then click the Red Diamond text line.
  • Drag the line to the top of the semi-circle.
  • In the Font tab, you can change the text style and font. (In this case use Bold and 14-point).

Adding texture to the background (wall/floor) of the chart:

The default background in the graph is gray and plain. You can enhance your graph by putting in a more colorful background.

  • Right-click the Wall of the chart and choose "Format Walls"
  • In the Patterns tab, select Fill Effects.
  • In the Texture tab, click a color block.
  • Click OK twice to close the Fill Effects Window and the Patterns tab.
  • To change the Floor of the chart, right-click the Floor and repeat the steps above.

(In our example, use Parchment color for the Wall and Green Marble for the Floor.)

Changing colors of data bars:

  • Right-click one of the color data bars.
  • Choose "Format Data Series..."
  • In the Patterns tab, choose a bright color to contrast the wall of your graph.
  • Click OK and repeat these steps again for the second set of data bars.
