Course Descriptions

Our focus is on English Literature while developing English language skills at the advanced level. Unadapted literary works are read. Students analyze, discuss and write essays on themes relevant to the texts they are reading. Our primary goals are to develop an understanding and appreciation of literature while developing communication skills and to prepare students for Tasks III and IV of the ELA Regents. Short stories, novels plays and poetry are read. English structure and vocabulary remain an essential element of instruction.


L1TB / L2TB (ESL – LANGUAGE ARTS – NOVICE LEVEL)
Focus is on English language Arts while developing English Communication Skills at the novice level. Students read, discuss and write about simple stories, myths and dialogues. Vocabulary study and language structure are emphasized.

L3TM / L4TM (ESL – LANGUAGE ARTS – BEGINNING LEVEL)
Focus is on English Literature. English Communication Skills at the beginning level are developed through reading, writing discussion of works of literature, including adapted stories, novels, plays and poetry. English structure and vocabulary study are presented throughout. Skills needed for Tasks III and IV of the ELA Regents are infused into the curriculum.

L5TA/L6TA (ESL - LANGUAGE ARTS - LOW INTERMEDIATE LEVEL)
Focus is on English Literature while English Communication Skills are developed at the low intermediate level. Students read fictional works, then discuss and write about themes relevant to these works. Novels, stories, plays and poetry are presented in adapted form. Vocabulary and English structure continue to be emphasized. Skills needed for Tasks III and IV of the ELA Regents are infused into the curriculum.

LT&T / LT8T - (ESL - LANGUAGE ARTS - HIGH INTERMEDIATE LEVEL)
Focus is on English Language Arts while developing the Four Communication Skills at the high intermediate level. English structure and vocabulary are stressed. Students at this level begin reading English literature in unadapted form. Novels stories, plays and poetry are studied in depth. Discussion and essay writing of an analytical nature make up the core of the curriculum. Skills needed for Tasks III and IV of the ELA Regents are infused.

LT9T / LTTT - (ESL - LANGUAGE ARTS - ADVANCED LEVEL)
Focus is on English Literature while developing English Language Skills at the advanced level. Unadapted literary works are read. Students analyze, discuss and write essays on themes relevant to the texts they are reading. Primary goals are to develop an understanding and appreciation of literature while developing the Four Communication Skills and to prepare for Tasks III and IV of the ELA Regents. Short stories, novels, plays and poetry are read. English structure and vocabulary remain an essential element of instruction.

LTAD - (ESL - LANGUAGEARTS - TRANSITIONAL LEVEL)
Focus is on English Literature while developing English Communication Skills at the transitional level. Unadapted novels, short stories, plays and poetry are examined and analyzed. Discussion and essay topics are on a sophisticated level with higher order thinking skills developed. Essay writing is ongoing. Students continue to develop an understanding and appreciation of literary works while finetuning the skills of communication. Structure and vocabulary continue to be fundamental to the curriculum.

LTRA/LTRB - (ESL - REGENTS PREPARATION)
Focus is on ELA Regents Preparation. This course is offered to all 11th grade ESL students in level 7 or higher, and prepares students for the 4 tasks of the ELA Regents. Intensive work analyzing works of fiction and nonfiction takes place. Emphasis is placed on essay writing and the comprehension of written text. Listening skills, organizational skills and test taking skills are developed.
