Introduction:

We have read the stories of epic heroes such as Jason, Theseus, Perseus, Heracles, Odysseus and Gilgamesh. They all share common characteristics of the ancient Greek concept of heroes.  These include a strange birth and death.  They are destined to greatness. They have to follow a path designed for them, often by the gods who provide them with special abilities. They usually have to complete an arduous quest or struggle.  Modern heroes (sometimes called Horatio Alger heroes) have to struggle as well. They often have to prove themselves as heroes through hard work and determination. They also might face difficulties or misfortunes along the way. Their special abilities are attained through persistence.
