CONTRACT

I  Required Materials

  1. Math notebook or designated section in loose-leaf binder.  Homework assignments should be saved and numbered, with the assignment written out on top of the page.
  2. Several pens and /or sharpened pencils.
  3. Other materials as indicated-calculators-should be brought to school every day (please note that calculators should be scientific, including a fraction key, principal trig functions, and memory), graph paper, formula sheets, Regents review book, etc.

II Student Responsibilities

  1. To arrive on time each day and be seated, ready to begin before the late bell rings.
  2. To complete homework every night which must be written out, neat, and complete to receive credit.  If you do not understand a particular problem, write it out show that you have made an attempt, then leave some space on your paper for corrections.  It is your responsibility to do homework every night-otherwise you will not learn the material.  Mathematics is not spectator sport.  Homework should be corrected, but not copied, during the review period.
  3. To put up homework on the board when it is your row’s turn to do so.  The class is a team and we depend on each other.
  4. To exchange telephone numbers with one or more classmates for missed work due to absence (this includes announcements of upcoming tests).  Make sure you choose a responsible person.
  5. To observe rudiments of courteous behavior and to be respectful toward yourself, the teacher, and others.
  6. All school policies are in effect, but some deserve special mention.  Wearing of hats, wearing and/or playing walk/discman players, carrying beepers and cell phones, and eating and drinking are all prohibited.
  7. To seek tutoring (during lunch, after school, or privately) if you are having difficulty or you fall behind.
  8. To speak to your grade guide or guidance counselor if personal or family problems are interfering with your ability to be successful.  If you have a long-term illness, notify your guidance counselor at once!  Do not wait until you return.
  9. Absolutely no special assignments or make-up work will be given to students who take vacations outside of those already designated by Board of Education.

III  Grading Policy

  1. Exams - 70%  Additional weight will be given to the midterm and final.  There will be 5-7 major tests (including midterm and final) and some quizzes.  Quizzes may be announced or unannounced, tests will always be announced.
  2. Homework-20%.  Both quantity and quality of homework will be appraised.
  3. Class participation – 10%.  Includes both quantity and quality of participation.  Attendance and punctuality also count toward this part of grade.

Please take note of the following:

  1. All students in the Regents-level classes will be expected to take the Regents exam.  There is five-point penalty for missing the exam.
  2. The primary aim of this course is to learn the material being taught.  If you cannot pass tests, it means that you have really missed that aim.  With this in mind, you must pass a majority (or half if there is an even number of tests given of your tests for a given term and must also have an overall exam average of 60 or higher to pass the course.  This means that the formula stated above is superceded by this rule.
  3. Extra credit assignments are generally discouraged, but may be completed to raise a passing grade at most five points.  Any project submitted for extra credit must be approved in advance by the instructor and must be of high quality if credit is to be granted.  Extra credit cannot be used to rise a failing grade to passing.  Extra credit is like icing on the cake.  The cake has to be there first.  On the other hand, extra credit points granted for solving challenging problems assigned in class or for homework with particular point values attached to them will be added to one of test grades and may thereby help you to pass the course.
