Media Literacy in the Classroom:
Creating Projects
May 16, 2005

Workshop Agenda

Opening / Discussion (5 minutes)
This week we will be working on/planning class projects. The outcome will be that next week we will have 3 examples of Media Literacy-based projects to present in the larger group session. In today’s session we will be working in small groups to learn the necessary steps to implementing technology topics in your classrooms.

Overview of the sessions in this workshop series:

Telling Stories with Pictures and Words

Teaching Students to Evaluate Media Resources

Visual Literacy and Using Primary Sources

Using Photoshop to Edit Pictures

Part I:Activity - Chosing a project (20 minutes)
Using Word, type up a description of the project – including what it will teach, what technology it will require, how long it will take, how many class sessions you need to finish it, and how it addresses media literacy.

Part II: Activity - Moving forward with the ideas (25 minutes)

Presenting teachers will read their outline of the project, and come up with action items to proceed to creating them.  Back in small group – collaborate on:

  • Locating and document resources for the project – websites, magazine articles, primary sources, etc…
  • Giving the session: challenges and opporunities
  • Knowing the problems inherent using technology in the classroom: (possible equipment malfunction, behavior of students, and lack of computer literacy skills included) come up with recommendations for a successful project for this particular topic.
  • Would this include a student helper?  Or would it require a computer lab?  Computer training classes for the student?
____

Part III: Activity - Next Steps for developing the projects (10 minutes)

Developing these projects will take time in/out of the classroom - MW facilitators are available to come to the classroom – or to provide online support to teachers.

  • What types of support will be needed?
  • When can I best provide this support?
  • How would teachers create these projects at a later date – without the support of MW facilitators?

Summary:  Presenting the Projects (15 minutes)

  • How will we present these projects to the larger group?
  • Would it be possible to lead an example of one or all of the projects?
  • Offer to help with PowerPoint, or to help present media literacy ideas without the use of PowerPoint (explore the choices behind not using PowerPoint).
Save work to flash drive – I will attach documents in an email to teachers later that day and set up times to work on the project presentations.
